The Marks of the masters

Identifying a copper pan often begins with the maker’s mark. Stamps, names, initials and other markings can provide valuable clues about the manufacturer, retailer, place of origin and approximate age of a piece.

Over the years, I have built a personal archive of Maker’s marks found on antique and vintage copper cookware from France and other European makers. Many of the examples in this collection come from pieces that have passed through my hands and are part of my own photographic archive.

Where possible, I have included information about the maker, location and approximate period of a particular stamp. Some marks are well documented, while others remain difficult to identify with certainty. Antique copper cookware can contain many clues, but a single stamp should not always be used on its own to determine the age or origin of a piece.

This growing archive is intended as a practical reference for collectors, cooks, dealers and anyone interested in identifying antique and vintage French and other European copper cookware.
