Perched above the shores of Lake Geneva in the renowned spa town of Évian-les-Bains, the Hôtel Royal Évian has stood as one of Europe’s most prestigious luxury hotels for more than a century. Designed by architect Albert Hébrard (1866–1942), the hotel was commissioned in 1905 by the Société des Eaux Minérales d’Évian, whose ambition was to create “the most beautiful hotel in Europe.” Surrounded by nineteen hectares of landscaped parkland and offering breathtaking views of the lake and the Alps, the Hôtel Royal officially opened its doors on June 16, 1909.

The hotel was named in honor of King Edward VII of England, for whom a magnificent suite was reserved from the outset. Tragically, the king passed away in 1910 before ever visiting the property, yet the name “Royal” remained and became synonymous with elegance, prestige, and refined hospitality.

From the Belle Époque onward, the Hôtel Royal became a favored retreat for royalty, aristocrats, artists, and statesmen from around the world. Poet Anna de Noailles welcomed distinguished guests here, while Marcel Proust spent time at the hotel writing portions of his masterpiece In Search of Lost Time. Over the years, its corridors hosted an extraordinary cast of international figures, including the Sultan of Zanzibar, the Maharaja of Kapurthala, Queen Amélie of Portugal, the Shah of Persia, and King Faisal of Iraq.

The hotel’s reputation continued to flourish throughout the twentieth century. Celebrated personalities such as Sacha Guitry, Yvonne Printemps, Greta Garbo, Maurice Chevalier, the Aga Khan, and François Mitterrand all contributed to its enduring legend. During both World Wars, the Hôtel Royal remained remarkably resilient. Throughout the Second World War, it served as a convalescent residence for Italian, German, and later American officers. Careful inventories ensured that its historic furnishings survived the conflict virtually intact.

A major chapter in the hotel’s history unfolded during the night of August 12–13, 1958, when a devastating fire destroyed the upper floors and roof. The property was subsequently restored, preserving its place among Europe’s most distinguished grand hotels. In 1970, the Société des Eaux Minérales d’Évian became part of the Danone Group, ensuring continued investment in the hotel’s future.

Architecturally, the Hôtel Royal is a graceful blend of Art Nouveau and early Art Deco influences. Its elegant rotundas, vaulted ceilings, and public spaces are adorned with the celebrated frescoes of Gustave Jaulmes, whose water-inspired scenes perfectly reflect the hotel’s natural surroundings and spa heritage.

Between 2013 and 2015, the property underwent an extensive restoration led by interior designer François Champsaur and chief heritage architect François Chatillon. Historic features were meticulously preserved while contemporary luxury was seamlessly integrated throughout the hotel. Original furnishings crafted from precious woods such as mahogany, rosewood, and Ceylon satinwood were restored, and all guest rooms and suites were carefully modernized. The top floor was transformed into a collection of exclusive private suites offering panoramic views across Lake Geneva and the Alpine peaks.

Today, the Hôtel Royal continues to offer an exceptional blend of history, luxury, and gastronomy. Its signature restaurant, Les Fresques, named after the magnificent historic ceiling paintings, has earned a Michelin star and is celebrated for its refined French cuisine.
